    Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – October 7, 2026

    The celebration was officially opened by Mr. Kiya Tsegaye, Chairperson of the National Board of YMCA Ethiopia, with an opening remark, and was followed by Mr. Befekadu Bezabih, Executive Director of YMCA Ethiopia, who welcomed guests and highlighted the organization’s legacy, achievements, and aspirations for the years ahead.

    The event continued with congratulatory messages and remarks from distinguished guests and partners, including Mrs. Nirina, General Secretary of the African Alliance of YMCAs (AAYMCAs); Mr. Otto Vainio, President of Finland YMCA; Ms. Sophia Stephan, Head of the Press and Cultural Section at the German Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Ass. Prof. Nebiyu Baye, State Minister of Culture and Sports. In their remarks, the speakers congratulated YMCA Ethiopia on reaching its 75th anniversary and commended the organization for its significant contribution to youth development, leadership, volunteerism, and community empowerment. They also encouraged YMCA Ethiopia to continue expanding its impact and creating more opportunities for young people in the years ahead.

    The celebration was further enriched by the presence of numerous national and international guests, including Mrs. Ethiopia Tilahun, Vice President of the African Alliance of YMCAs (AAYMCAs); Mr. Ephrem Lemma, Zonal Representative for the Eastern Zone of the African Alliance; Mr. Jared Musima, National General Secretary of Kenya YMCA; representatives from Finland YMCA; partners; former staff members; alumni; youth representatives; volunteers; and YMCA leaders from across Ethiopia.

    One of the highlights of the day was a panel discussion titled “75 Years of Change: The Quest for Space, Skills, and Opportunity in Ethiopian Youth Empowerment.” The session was moderated by Mr. Solomon Markos, National Board Member of YMCA Ethiopia, and featured distinguished panelists including Dr. Yordanos Alem, Vice Chair of the YMCA Ethiopia National Board; Mrs. Tenagne Degefu, National Board Member of YMCA Ethiopia; and Mrs. Helen Tefera, Program Director of YMCA Ethiopia. The discussion explored YMCA Ethiopia’s historical contribution to youth empowerment and examined future opportunities and challenges in creating inclusive spaces, developing skills, and expanding meaningful opportunities for young people.

    The audience also heard inspiring testimonials from alumni and youth representatives, delivered by Solomon Asmamaw and Bethelhem Jambo, who shared personal stories of transformation and the lasting impact YMCA has had on their lives.

    Adding to the celebration was a remarkable ensemble vocal and musical drama performance by the Addis Ketema Branch of YMCA Ethiopia. Through music, storytelling, and drama, the performers beautifully illustrated YMCA’s journey from its early years to its present-day achievements, showcasing the organization’s enduring relevance and impact on generations of young people.

    The event was filled with meaningful reflections, vibrant discussions, cultural performances, networking opportunities, and moments of celebration that honored YMCA Ethiopia’s rich history and inspiring future.

    The anniversary program concluded with closing remarks from Befekadu Bezabih, who expressed gratitude to all partners, supporters, members, and stakeholders who have contributed to YMCA Ethiopia’s success over the past 75 years.     YMCA Ethiopia Successfully Holds Its 26th General Assembly

    Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – YMCA Ethiopia successfully convened its 26th General Assembly on Saturday, March 21, bringing together members, National Board representatives, branch leaders, staff, and key stakeholders from across the country to review organizational performance, celebrate achievements, and set strategic priorities for the future.

    The General Assembly served as an important governance platform for reflection, accountability, decision-making, and planning. The gathering reaffirmed YMCA Ethiopia’s shared commitment to empowering young people, strengthening communities, and expanding opportunities throughout Ethiopia.

    The event officially opened with a welcoming and introductory speech delivered by Mr. Befekadu, Executive Director of YMCA Ethiopia, who highlighted the organization’s progress, achievements, and vision for the years ahead. He emphasized the importance of collective leadership, partnership, and innovation in advancing YMCA Ethiopia’s mission and impact.

    The Assembly then reviewed the 2025 National Board Annual Report, presented by Mr. Kiya, National Board Chairperson, outlining key governance achievements, organizational developments, and strategic milestones reached during the reporting period.

    Following this, Mrs. Helen, Program Director, presented the 2025 Annual Program and Fiscal Report, providing a comprehensive overview of program implementation, achievements, challenges, and progress made across YMCA Ethiopia’s areas of intervention.

    One of the highlights of the Assembly was the presentation of inspiring case stories from the Addis Ketema, Hawassa, and Wolaita Sodo Branch Offices. Shared by Mr. Tesfaye, Mrs. Chaltu, and Mr. Gedion, the presentations demonstrated the tangible impact of YMCA Ethiopia’s work in transforming the lives of young people and communities through education, skills development, leadership opportunities, and community engagement initiatives.

    The Assembly also received the 2025 Annual Financial Report, presented by Mr. Bereket, Chief Accountant, which provided members with a detailed overview of the organization’s financial performance, resource utilization, and accountability mechanisms.

    To further ensure transparency and good governance, the 2025 External Audit Report was presented by Mr. Endalkachew, Audit Manager of FAHH Audit Firm, who shared the findings of the independent audit. Following discussions and deliberations, the General Assembly approved the Board Annual Report, Program and Fiscal Report, Financial Report, and Audit Report.

    Looking ahead, Mr. Befekadu, Executive Director, presented the 2026 Annual Fiscal Plan, outlining strategic priorities and key areas of focus for the coming year. This was followed by the presentation of the 2026 Annual Budget Plan by Mr. Bereket, Chief Accountant, detailing the proposed allocation of resources to support YMCA Ethiopia’s programs and operations.

    Members of the General Assembly actively participated in discussions regarding the proposed plans and budget. Following constructive deliberations, the 2026 Fiscal Plan and Annual Budget Plan were formally approved by the General Assembly, demonstrating members’ confidence in the organization’s strategic direction and financial stewardship.

    The Assembly also considered proposed resolutions to the YMCA Ethiopia Bylaw, presented by Mr. Befekadu, Executive Director. After thorough discussion and review by members, the proposed resolutions were approved, strengthening the organization’s governance framework and supporting its continued growth and effectiveness.

    The meeting concluded with closing remarks recognizing the dedication and contributions of members, staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters who continue to advance YMCA Ethiopia’s mission. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to working together to create greater opportunities for young people and communities across Ethiopia.

    Following the formal proceedings, participants gathered for a group photo session and networking lunch, providing an opportunity to celebrate the successful completion of the 26th General Assembly and strengthen relationships among members and stakeholders.

    Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – YMCA Ethiopia is pleased to announce the beginning of a promising partnership with the International Community School (ICS) Addis Ababa, marking an important step forward in expanding digital access and educational opportunities for young people and communities across Ethiopia.

    As part of this collaboration, ICS has generously donated 25 laptop computers, 2 printers, 2 projectors, books, and various office materials to support YMCA Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen digital learning spaces and enhance access to technology within its local branches.

    The donated resources will play a significant role in improving digital infrastructure across YMCA Ethiopia’s branch offices, enabling more young people to access technology, develop digital skills, and participate in educational and innovation-focused programs.     The event was honored by the presence of Valerian, Director of EJW-World Service Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, and his team, as well as Mr. Du Prince Tachakote, Treasurer of the YMCA Africa Alliance.     A key highlight of the gathering was the farewell ceremony for six outgoing board members, recognizing their dedication and contributions. At the same time, the organization welcomed six new board members who will help steer the YMCA’s mission forward.

    The assembly also featured a showcase from various YMCA branches, where representatives shared updates on their projects and highlighted the impact of their work in local communities. The event was further enriched by cultural performances from the Arat Kilo and Addis Ketema branch youth, who entertained attendees with vibrant music and dance.

    YMCA Ethiopia recently visited the newly established Teji Branch to engage with the local government administration and explore opportunities for collaboration in supporting the youth of Teji. The primary aim of the visit was to discuss the potential for YMCA Ethiopia to begin operations in the area, focusing on addressing the needs of the young population in Teji.

    During the visit, YMCA Ethiopia Team met with key officials from the local government office, where discussions centered on how both parties could work together to provide valuable support to the youth in the region. The administration expressed strong enthusiasm for the collaboration, recognizing the urgent need for youth-oriented programs and services, particularly in areas like peacebuilding and skill building initiatives and safe spaces etc…

    YMCA Ethiopia also had the opportunity to visit the local youth center in Teji. This visit provided valuable insights into the current needs and aspirations of the youth in the area, further emphasizing the importance of implementing programs that foster personal development, peace, and skill-building. The youth center is a vital resource for the community, and YMCA Ethiopia is eager to contribute to its growth and expansion.

    Mr. Tadele Tesfa, the Teji Woreda Administrator, emphasized that the community is home to a large number of young people who are in need of immediate support and development opportunities. He assured YMCA Ethiopia of his office’s full support in facilitating the successful launch and ongoing operations of the branch in Teji.
